Scientists at the private lab GeneBling have successfully encoded their company's name and tagline into the genome of a mouse. They used morse code (with G standing for "long" and "A" standing for "short") but they claim any other encoding could have been used just as well. With the mouse none the worse for the procedure, it's bred quite happily with others in the lab, producing a whole generation of more-or-less GeneBling'ed offspring.Talk about a gift for someone who has everything!
Representatives from GeneBling contend there are numerous serious uses for such genetic tagging, such as preserving intellectual property rights, tracing food and drug shipments, etc. But they add that within a year they'll also offer a line of new products to individuals and corporations who want their names, logos, or other information propagated for some time. You'll be able to grow your own grass (genetically related to you), get real close to your pets (and stay legal), and even be able to claim your own subspecies of some insect, for example. The possibilities are endless...
